Vietnam History
Vietnam is located on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia along with Cambodia and Laos. The northern neighbor of the country is China. The eastern edge of the country is the South China Sea. Economically, Vietnam is currently the fastest growing country in Southeast Asia. The country is also growing quickly in population. The current Vietnam population is estimated to be more than 85 million people.
The area that is now known as Vietnam has been inhabited for thousands of years. The country has been ruled by many different countries, including China, France, and Japan, throughout its long history. In the mid 1900s, the Viet Minh movement fought for independence from the Japanese.
The Communist party has controlled the Vietnam government since just after the Vietnam War. However, the Vietnam government is slightly different than traditional Communist structures. In the mid 1980s the government implemented free market reforms that allowed private ownership in some industries, such as agriculture. This is part of what led to the quick growth of the economy of the country. Today, while the Communist party controls the government, business owners are able to make their own decisions about their companies on a day-to-day basis. Also, the government allows individuals to control foreign investment. This has led to an increase in the amount of domestic savings in the country, which has also led to the growth of the country's economy. The country is still considered poor, and the vast majority of the Vietnam population is living below the poverty level, but the country is making strides to improve the economic condition of its populace.
